We posed 5 questions to our friend John Merrill of Merrill Photo Supply, located in Charleston, West Virginia, about his new APM 1000.
After setting up the APM, how long was it before your first order?
JM: We placed our APM on the countertop in a very accessible part of the store. I think we had our first orders that day.
Lucidiom: What type of printer are you connected to and how are you connected?
JM: Our APM is connected directly to a Copal DPB-1000 for instant 4x6 prints (59¢), and is also networked to a D-Carrier that is connected to an analog Noritsu. We use the D-Carrier for 4x6 (32¢), 5x7 ($2.95), and 8x10 ($5.50). We are very pleased with this configuration. Actually, the print quality is almost identical between the two devices.
We are especially pleased with the speed of the Copal printer. We find that our customers are willing to pay the premium price for instant prints. For customers that are price sensitive, we print 4x6 prints via the D-Carrier.
Has the APM been more or less successful than you anticipated?
JM: The APM has definitely been as successful as we predicted. We had a good idea of what our customers wanted and spent some time looking for the right product. We researched the Kodak and Fuji systems, but based on testimonials from other APM customers we decided to go with the APM.
We feel like the APM business will only increase in the coming months. As we sell digital cameras, we demonstrate the APM and customers are excited about the possibilities.
What is your favorite feature of the APM?
JM: There are three features that we really love about the APM:
1. The Ease of Use. Even first-time users rarely need assistance. Once a user has used the APM, they become very comfortable and need little to no assistance.
2. Red-Eye Removal. A good portion of our business is families with small children. For those of us in the industry, we know that Red-Eye is more common with that type of picture. I would say that around 40% of our customers use the Red-Eye feature in the APM. It is very easy to use and works flawlessly.
3. Speed. The APM is by far the fastest system I have tried. My customers are in and out of the machine very quickly. The Copal is especially fast. When I was looking into which system to purchase, I looked long and hard at the Fuji system and the speed and image quality just wasn’t there.
What is your least favorite feature of the APM?
JM: The cost of materials for the Copal printer is a little high. For now, the price is fine. We charge a premium for those customers who want instant prints and they are willing to pay for the convenience. I don’t think we are getting any customer complaints on price now, but I can see a time in the future that the price will become an issue. By then, hopefully the paper price will have gone down.
